Fernbank Museum of Natural History

If you’re like most families, your children have probably uttered the timeless catch phrase of summer break: “I’m bored!” Here are some terrific places around town where you entertain your kids, and maybe even teach them a thing or two along the way!

Atlanta History Center

The 33-acre campus of the Atlanta History Center includes a variety of exhibits and attractions to educate, inform, and immerse you in the legacy of Atlanta. Learn about the city’s role in the Civil War, the civil rights movement, and how the metro region grew from a small railroad town to the massive metropololis that it is today. The museum grounds are home to the Smith Family Farm – experience the past by visiting the original farmhouse from the 1840s, which sits alongside an authentic smokehouse, blacksmith shop, chicken coop, sheep pen, slave cabin and gardens, and much more. This fall, the Atlanta Cyclorama, a 365-degree depiction of the Civil War, will be unveiled after its move and restoration after years at Grant Park. For more information on the Atlanta History Center, visit the museum’s website.

Chattahoochee Nature Center

Situated on 127 acres alongside the Chattahoochee River, the Chattahoochee Nature Center is a museum, nature preserve, and interpretive center dedicated to environmental education. Bring a picnic lunch and hike miles of trails and boardwalks through woodlands, wetlands, riverside habitats. Kids will love this summer’s special exhibit, Butterfly Encounter, where you can walk among butterflies and dozens of beautiful nectar plants. For more information, visit the Chattahoochee Nature Center website.

Fernbank Museum of Natural History

Fernbank Museum and Science Center are situated in the midst of an old-growth forest, one of the few such forests remaining in the Atlanta area. The museum houses a variety of exhibits on the habitats and culture of Georgia, as well as an incredible dinosaur exhibit, The Giants of the Mesozoic. The new outdoor exhibit, WildWoods, features elevated walkways to get a close-up look at the wonder of nature. On rainy days, take the kids to NatureQuest, a hands-on interactive and educational playground on the museum’s top floor. Don’t forget to check out one of the incredible giant screen movies! For more information on Fernbank, visit the museum’s website.
