This new year, resolve to protect your most valuable investment – your home! Here are some easy ways to help your home thrive in 2019!
Tidy Up
This year, make house cleaning a family affair. Assign daily duties to each household member to cover each area of your home. The littlest ones can clean their rooms, sweep, and wipe down tables and countertops. Older kids can take out the trash, vacuum or mop, do their own laundry, and even prepare easy meals. This will take the burden off of mom and dad, and allow you time to tackle some larger home improvement or maintenance projects!
Safeguard Your Home
Cold winter days are the perfect time to do routine maintenance that is often ignored during warmer weather. Monitor the weather forecast – if the temperature is forecast to drop below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, wrap your pipes in insulation to ensure they don’t crack or burst. Make sure you’ve turned off the water to all outdoor spigots as well. This is also the perfect time to check and replace the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms. You should have a carbon monoxide alarm for each level of your home and near any gas appliances, such as furnaces or dryers.
Increase the Energy Efficiency
Don’t waste money on lost energy! Put some dollars back in your pocket with simple adjustments to your lighting and water equipment. Replace burned out bulbs with LED lighting. LED bulbs use up to 75% less energy, last for years, and are cooler to the touch, making it a safer option for table lamps and other exposed fixtures. Look for the “Energy Star” label to ensure that you are purchasing high-quality products. Another easy way to improve energy efficient is to set your hot water heater to 120 to 130 degrees. Don’t reduce it below 120 degrees, as lower temperatures may promote bacteria growth. You can also install low-flow shower heads to conserve water and save on costs.
Extend an Invitation
This year, resolve that your house will truly feel like a home! Invite your family, friends and neighbors over for brunch, coffee, or a game night. Offer to host a neighborhood barbecue in the summer or cookie swap at Christmas. Don’t stress about the food or decor – keep it simple, and enjoy the camaraderie and wonderful memories made with your guests!
