In honor of Mother’s Day this weekend (Sunday, May 12 for those you now panicking) we put together a few of Mom’s most loved, most requested home design features. As a bonus, these are all items you can find in most Labb homes!
Open-Concept Floor Plans with Clear Sight Lines from the Kitchen
This is every mom’s #1 request. Even dads have been known to make this a priority. It’s no wonder that open-concept floorplans have taken over the marketplace. Not only do those preparing food in the kitchen want to be a part of the fun when entertaining, but parents want to see their kids playing in the next room. Kids always find a way to get in trouble when Mom can’t see what they’re doing!
The Perfect Backyard
Kids love to play outside, and moms love to let them do it. They won’t make a mess with toys in the living room if they’re busy playing in the backyard. Big, level backyards with a fence are most requested. Room for a swing set, a sandbox, and an open area for playing catch or tag are all big sellers. Moms like to avoid ponds, which could be hazardous and will certainly breed mosquitos, but include a swimming pool when possible. Metro Atlanta gets hot in the summer time!
Finishes that are Easy to Maintain
Moms want surfaces in their homes that are easy to keep clean, hold up well after years of scrubbing, and can withstand the spills and leaks that are inevitable with children. Though pretty, marble countertops can stain easily. Butcher block (or wood) countertops must be oiled to avoid gross bacteria from growing in them. Granite countertops are classic for a reason – they are low-maintenance and durable. Moms also prefer stainless-steel appliances and fixtures that are fingerprint-resistant, as well as waterproof carpet pad – so very worth the money when the first glass of grape juice falls to the floor.
Laundry in the Right Place
If every bedroom in a house is located on the second floor but the laundry room is off the kitchen downstairs, it is a recipe for more work for Mom. She wants the laundry central to bedrooms in the home, where baskets won’t need to be hauled up and down stairs. A bonus request: a laundry room big enough for a laundry sink (for soaking kids’ stained clothes) and a folding table below cabinets, where cleaning supplies can be stored.
Storage
Kids come with lots of stuff, and moms request storage so they can hide it when needed. Linen closets, large bedroom closets, and basements are all popular ways to get more storage space in a home. Partially finished attic space is another, often un-utilized area where items can be stored as long as they are not sensitive to heat. Attics in Metro Atlanta are hot in the summer time, and you don’t want Christmas candles melting in August.
Powder Room/Half-Bath
Located on the first floor, this is the bathroom kids are not allowed to enter… at least when company is expected. It’s nice to have one bathroom in the house where kids can’t muddy the good towels, make a mess on the floor, and spit toothpaste on the mirror.
At Labb Homes communities across Metro Atlanta, we’re listening to all of these requests. Many of our new homes have most, if not all, of these items included as standard features!
