Fun Attractions Close to Home for Spring Break 2019

Posted: Apr 01, 2019

Schools across the Metro Atlanta area are quiet today, as the first official day of Spring Break 2019 kicks off. If you’re at home with kids this week, tortured by photos of friends at the beach, we’ve got you covered with some fun attractions and events happening in your own backyard.

Gwinnett Stripers Baseball

Support your local minor league team at Opening Day, this Thursday, April 4th. The first game of the season starts at 7:05 p.m. against the Norfolk Tides at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville. Tickets start at just $8.  You can also catch the game on Friday, April 5th with the Striper’s Mardi Gras Night, where there will be music, great creole food, and the first firework display of the season.

Tree-Top Quest

Visit The Gwinnett Environmental Center for Tree-Top Quest, where you can challenge yourself on ropes, ladders, zip lines, and bridges in the tree tops. This is an up-close and personal experience with the environment that will let you see the forest like you’ve never seen it before. Designed to be both fun and educational, there are environmental questions and answers throughout the course.  Visit https://www.treetopquest.com/gwinnett/ for tickets, reservations, group rates, hours of operation, and other information.

Zoo Atlanta

It’s always fun to visit your favorite animals at Zoo Atlanta, but it’s even better to do it on Spring Break, when the weather is cool and the animals are more active. See the award-winning panda exhibit, view endangered species up close, and learn about lemurs, elephants, and rare tropical birds. For all the details on making your spring break trip the best yet, go to “Spring Break at the Zoo.”

Stone Mountain

Stone Mountain’s newest attraction, Mega Bugs, opens just in time for Spring Break 2019. It features more than 70 new exhibits of larger-than-life insects and is an immersive and interactive area for bug lovers of any age to explore. Experience a bug’s life, interact with enormous insects, and come face-to-face with giant bugs, including a 20-foot hissing cockroach! This fun new attraction is included with All-Attraction Passes and Mountain Memberships. For details and tickets, visit www.stonemountain.com.

Georgia Aquarium

Visit the Georgia Aquarium in downtown Atlanta for an aquarium experience like no other. See Beluga Whales, Whale Sharks, sea otters, and penguins. Explore fresh water river systems and spend a little extra to go “Behind the Seas” on a tour that gives a glimpse into how the aquarium runs and how all those fish get fed every day. For ticket prices and other special events throughout the year, visit www.georgiaaquarium.org.

Gold Mining

Take a day-trip to the North Georgia mountains and learn a little about America’s first Gold Rush in Dahlonega, GA. At Consolidated Gold Mine, you can head 200 feet underground to see how miners blasted quartz veins to uncover huge gold deposits. Then, you’ll learn how to pan for gold and have a chance to strike it rich! Tours start at $18 for adults and $12 for children.

There are so many great things to do in and around Metro Atlanta. This spring break, stay close to home, have fun, and learn a little something with these nearby events and attractions.
