Get Your Home Ready for a New School Year

Posted: Jul 31, 2018

Summer break is drawing to an end, and it’s time for kids to head back to school! Here are great ways to prep your home for a smooth transition to a new school year.

Prep lunch in advance. Lunches can be packed the evening before or Sunday before the start of the week. This is a task where all the kids can pitch in. Sandwich materials like deli meat, cheese, lettuce, and tomato can be placed in labeled compartments in the fridge for easy access. Buy pre-packaged snacks like chips or pretzels in bulk, or put individual servings of snacks into small plastic baggies. Items like string cheese and yogurt tubes are easy to grab for little hands.

Whether your kids typically study in their bedrooms, at the kitchen table, or the family room, make sure there are plenty of school supplies nearby. Purchase an organizer for their desks to hold pencils, pens, markers, extra paper, and anything else they will need to complete homework. If they will be studying in a common area, designate a cubby or drawer to hold school supplies, or purchase a caddy that can be moved from room to room as needed.

Create a central spot in the kitchen to keep track of school papers and important dates. While the kids are eating their afternoon snack or during dinner prep, have them unpack their backpacks and place important announcements or papers to be signed in a designated spot. Hang a traditional or dry-erase calendar, and use a different-colored marker for each child to mark upcoming sports practices, play rehearsals, parent meetings, etc.

Clean out closets and drawers. If your kids have outgrown some of their clothes, set those aside for donation, and toss any items that are worn or damaged. Consider purchasing a hanging clothes organizer with compartments for each child to hold clothes for each weekday – this is a great way to keep you from scrambling to find clothes on busy mornings!

Organize your foyer. Hanging utility hooks adhere easily to the wall and are perfect for storing jackets, backpacks, and small umbrellas. A low-slung shelf is a great way to organize everyone’s shoes. Making a designated space for these items will clear the clutter and help mornings to run much more smoothly!
