Monday, May 27th is Memorial Day, when we gather with family and friends to remember fallen military service members who died while protecting our country. The official federal holiday was originally called “Decoration Day,” a day of remembrance enacted immediately following the Civil War. In 1968, Congress established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May, and now it is a three-day weekend highlighted by poignant moments of remembrance. It marks the unofficial start of the summer season.
Parades celebrating armed service members take place every year on Memorial Day in Chicago, New York, and Washington, D.C. For local parades and events in and near Metro Atlanta, visit the AJC. They’ve put together a great list of events to respectfully observe the holiday across our area.
Several local communities will host live music, craft fairs, and fireworks to celebrate and remember our troops. Two of our favorites, loaded with patriotic fanfare and a little closer to home are the Fireworks at Lanier Islands and the Stone Mountain Memorial Day Weekend Salute the Troops, a weekend-long celebration that includes a laser show.
Most importantly, Americans across the globe will stop at 3 p.m. (local time) on Monday, May 27th to observe a national moment of silence in recognition of the ultimate sacrifice paid by our soldiers. All of us at Labb Homes will be joining them, and we encourage you to do the same. We wish you all a safe and happy Memorial Weekend!
